NEW YORK (AP) - Federal prosecutors on Tuesday asked a judge to deny Sen. Bob Menendez's request to postpone a bribery trial scheduled for next spring by two months to July.A week after the defense team laid out several reasons why they believe the trial of the Democrat and his co-defendants, including his wife, should be postponed, prosecutors announced their opposition to the postponement.
"The schedule was appropriate and consistent with the public's strong interest in a speedy trial," prosecutors wrote.7 million documents to examine, an "unprecedented" indictment of a foreign agent, and issues to be resolved that call for a postponement of the trial, currently scheduled for May 6th. They stated that despite two months' notice, the postponement would mean that the defendant would be on trial within 10 months of his arrest.
Four defendants, including a senator, his wife, and a third defendant, were also acquitted of conspiracy to use senators as agents of the Egyptian government, even though they had been disqualified from membership.
insisted."Given the complexity of this case and the seriousness of the charges at issue, the speed with which this case was tried is extraordinary," the attorneys wrote in their motion for adjournment.Stein in Manhattan dismissed the charges on several grounds, including constitutional and related reasons and that New York federal court was the wrong venue.
In a letter to the judge, 4,444 prosecutors said the trial should not be delayed because the large body of evidence presented to the defense is consistent with what the government promised at its first meeting in October.
